When problems arise, we always try to find “good professionals.” If we have a legal difficulty, we look for a “good lawyer.”
But, I wonder… what does it mean to be a “good lawyer”? . In my opinion, from my humble opinion, and unless better criteria, I believe that it is the one that meets the following requirements:
1º.-Have passion for the performance of your professional work . “Vibrate” by a favorable resolution and be “destroyed” by a dismissal ruling Law Tutor. Feel the right, feel what you do.
Víctor Küppers, a prominent motivational speaker, points out that:
«The value of a person can be determined with the formula:
(Knowledge + Skill) x Attitude»
As Kuppers reflects, capacity and ability add, but “attitude” multiplies. How many issues have we considered lost and yet we end up winning after having fought tirelessly?…
Effort, being positive and having a high level of dedication and commitment to our clients and their problems, in many cases, will offer us favorable results.
Luís Galindo, also a renowned motivational speaker, teaches us about this point:
“Put all your heart, all your soul and all your mind into everything you do, even the simplest things. “In this lies the secret of success.” (…) I have been on the street for 33 years and I have not met anyone who, putting their heart into it, does badly (…)”.
2º.-Specialization . Only the lawyer who perfectly knows the legal discipline in question will be able to offer the best technique . There will be general subjects that do not require extra knowledge, but there will be many others in which very specific knowledge is required.
3º.-Constant study and updating . “Shrimp that falls asleep, it carries current” . Being up to date with the latest jurisprudence and regulatory changes is vital to being able to offer better rights.
4º.-Customer treatment . Immediate intervention in the needs that our clients may ask us and, then, periodic information on the status of their procedure, will mark a clear line between their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with our professional work.
The closeness and constant treatment with the client will generate a bond of trust between Lawyer-Client that will mean, without a doubt, that the latter entrusts new matters to his lawyer.
5º.- Always, without exception, the good lawyer, above his economic interest, respects the ethical principles and practices established by our code of ethics , both with the client and with the colleague. Humility always characterizes him.
