How to Handle a Dog Who Is Fearful of Strangers

Wendy Johnson, January 24, 2025

If your dog is fearful of strangers, it can be a challenging behavior to manage. Fear of unfamiliar people is common in dogs, but with patience and the right approach, you can help your dog feel more comfortable and confident PUPPY TRAINING. Here are some strategies to help your dog overcome their fear of strangers:

1. Take It Slow

Introduce your dog to strangers gradually. Start with a calm, non-threatening approach by having a stranger sit or stand quietly at a distance. Let your dog approach at their own pace, and avoid forcing any interaction. This gradual exposure helps your dog feel less overwhelmed.

2. Use Positive Reinforcement

Reward your dog with treats, praise, or toys when they show curiosity or calm behavior around strangers. Positive reinforcement helps them associate new people with good experiences, reducing fear over time.

3. Create a Safe Space

Make sure your dog has a safe space, like a crate or a designated area, where they can retreat if they feel scared. Let them control the situation by choosing when to approach the stranger, which can give them a sense of security.

4. Avoid Punishment

Never punish your dog for being fearful or nervous. Punishment can increase anxiety and worsen the behavior. Instead, focus on reinforcing calm and confident responses to new people.

5. Desensitize to New People

Slowly expose your dog to more strangers in a controlled environment. Have a friend or family member come over and offer treats while maintaining a calm and relaxed demeanor. Gradually, your dog will learn that strangers aren’t a threat.

6. Teach Basic Commands

Basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come” can help redirect your dog’s attention away from their fear. Using these commands during encounters with strangers gives your dog structure and helps them focus on you rather than the unfamiliar person.

7. Be Patient

Overcoming fear takes time. Be patient with your dog, and avoid pushing them too quickly. Gradual, positive experiences will help build their confidence around strangers at their own pace.

With understanding and consistent training, your fearful dog can learn to feel more comfortable around strangers, creating a more relaxed and enjoyable environment for everyone.
